If you have been teaching yoga for a long time, making your weekly classes new and different can be difficult. For both teacher and student, changing up a yoga class is crucial to honing your practice, learning new skills, and staying engaged. If you are running low on ideas for yoga classes, or are simply looking for some yoga inspiration, try these methods to change up your weekly yoga classes.

Yoga Class Themes

Having a yoga class theme is a great way to add variety to your class and keep your students actively engaged in their practice. These themes can range from targeting certain muscle groups to finding specific thoughts and ideas that motivate. Some themes to try are:

  • Concepts or values such as “gratitude” or “letting go.” This might mean opening your class with a quote or story about this idea, or discussing ways to implement these concepts into the class and everyday life.
  • Dedicate the practice to someone else. Encouraging your class to think about a maternal figure in their life around Mother’s Day, focusing energy in yoga on a relationship students would like to grow, or dedicating your practice to someone else is a great way to find yoga inspiration.
  • Isolate certain muscle groups. Shaping your yoga class around exploring specific stretches and strengthening exercises throughout the body is another way to change up your routine.

Shape Your Practice Around The Time Of Year

Adapting your yoga classes to the time of year can add variety to your practice and help your students be present in the current moment. Some ways to add seasonal variety to your weekly yoga classes include:

  • Build your class around current events. For example, the holiday season may be a hectic time for your students. In the few leads leading up to the end of the year, centering your class around peace and calm during frenzied times is a great way to keep your class engaged.
  • Find inspiration in weather and temporal changes. Using the weather to structure your yoga class is another way to add novelty to your weekly sessions. You can add more heat to your warm-up in colder weather, or incorporating themes of fresh starts and new beginnings during spring. This may even mean changing the physical setting of your class, if possible, to make the most of the weather at hand.

Ask Your Students What They Want to Get Out of Class

One of the easiest ways to find yoga inspiration as a coach is to ask your students what they are hoping to get out of class. Constructive feedback is one of the best ways to grow as a teacher. Opening the floor to your class and asking them what they would like to work on may be a great starting point for your inspiration. Sending email surveys can be a great way to start this process. Websites such SurveyMonkey and Typeform allow you to create unique survey and easily keep track of your responses.

Continue Your Own Education and Bring It To Class

As a yoga instructor, there are always opportunities to improve your skills and hone your own practice. That may mean studying a new and unfamiliar branch of yoga, attending a yoga retreat or festival in a new location, or getting more specialized in a certain area of training. Broadening your own practice and breadth of skill and bringing that into your class can help you find yoga inspiration and keep your class new and different.
