Pitta Dosha Characteristics

Pitta dosha characteristics are all based on the elements of fire and water: elements that dominate this dosha. A pitta personality is fiery and welcomes transformations for both the body and the mind through controlling the body’s metabolism, digestion, and energy production. It is also responsible for intelligence and understanding in the mind.

Physical Characteristics

People who have a dominant pitta personality are usually medium size and weight. They are strong with well-defined muscles. Pittas often have a strong metabolism and good digestion. Their body temperatures run high with an affinity towards perspiring more. Additionally, pittas can sleep soundly, but for shorter amounts of time. They enjoy movement and exercise. When pittas are out of balance they may get skin rashes, ulcers, heartburn, and indigestion.

Emotional Characteristics

Emotional pitta dosha characteristics manifest as confidence, passion, and concentration. A person with a pitta personality is often competitive, confident, quick at making decisions, a great teacher, and an excellent public speaker. While they have great management and leadership skills, an out-of-balance pitta may be authoritarian, short-tempered, and argumentative.

Exercise Guidelines

A pitta dosha personality needs exercise as an outlet for their competitive spirit. However, exercise should not induce stress. Given their warm nature from their fire element, pittas love spending time in or near the water. This includes swimming, surfing, and paddle boarding. Pittas love to exercise outside, as nature and fresh air are calming for them. Pitta’s should also include yoga, weight lifting, and the elliptical machine into their routine for cooler and more calming exercise. While pittas run warm and their fiery nature welcomes heat, too much of this can bring this dosha type out of balance.

Nutritional Guidelines

Because pitta dosha characteristics are associated with heat in the mind and body, this dosha should favor cooling foods including those with a sweet and bitter taste. They should avoid foods that are overly salty and sour. Pittas should avoid fruits like grapefruits and apricots and instead, go for avocados, mangoes, pomegranates, and oranges. Pittas should eat raw vegetables with every meal as these are cooling and will not negatively impact their digestive system. The best vegetables for pittas are cucumbers, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, and zucchini. Pittas should never skip a meal or let themselves get overly hungry as this can impact their dosha balance.

Finding Balance

An imbalanced pitta dosha can cause heated emotions such as jealousy, criticism, frustration, and anger. Physically, an imbalance can cause inflammation throughout the body, including ulcers. To keep the pitta dosha balanced, one should make lifestyle choices that are calming, cooling, and stabilizing. For example:

  • Listening to their bodies and not pressure themselves to exercise everyday
  • Spending time outside, even if just for a quick walk
  • Opening windows to let fresh air cool the room
  • Adding fresh flowers to the home and office
  • Keeping colors in their environments including blues, greens and silvers
