Since the start of a series of despicable criminals have found themselves before the courts for offences ranging from 'upskirting' and indecent child images to 'brutal' sex assaults and rape.
Some of them were committed while in positions of trust, including a Boys Brigade leader and two teachers, while others were carried out online or over the 'dark web'. Thomas Robert Peel indecently assaulted a young boy in Barnoldswick around 20 years ago and made him perform sex acts on him. Adrian Gartshore-Taylor sexually abused a year-old boy multiple times over weeks and months in at Great Birchwood Country Park and Campsite at Warton, near Lytham. The year-old, who was a car boot salesman living in a caravan on the site, enticed the boy - who cannot be identified due to legal reasons - to work for him and help him sell his goods.
On one occasion he convinced the boy's father to let him stay overnight at his caravan so that they could start setting up the car boot stall early in the morning. Gartshore-Taylor bought the boy the latest mobile phone and trainers, as well as taking him on trips to the cinema, as a way to buy his loyalty. The boy's mum became slightly suspicious at what was going on, but because of a lack of evidence over anything untoward she assumed he was buying these things himself with his extra money from working for the defendant.
The court heard how in the near two decades since the abuse, the victim had suffered a result of the trauma of the sexual assaults on him, suffering from depression and anxiety for a decade. Judge Robert Altham said Bissett had 'not shown a shred of remorse' and praised the 'contrasting courage of the five complainants'. Bissett was jailed for a total six-and-a-half years and ordered to the sex offenders register for life. William Gerald Lenehan tried to meet up with a parent to abuse his two daughters and was caught after it turned out to be an undercover police officer.
The 'determined and premeditated' year-old from Preston was in secret online contact with the officer for two months and used secure s based in Russia so he couldn't be traced. He also installed special software on his mobile phone making it 'difficult or impossible' to check his browsing history and also had access to the 'dark web'. Preston Crown Court heard how police officers in Kent launched an investigation in early to 'identify and investigate individuals arranging to meet and facilitate sex offences with children'.
Lenehan made contact with the undercover officer in May and used the address name 'Exciting Times'. He had s with Russian-based Yandex and Protonmail and prosecutors said they are 'known not to share information with local enforcement agencies'. Four days after making contact with the officer Lenehan told him to first send a picture of a sex act involving his daughter and then they could go on to "trade some heavy stuff".
Lenehan suggested they set up a group in a chat room application and the defendant used the name 'Gary'. Between May and July Lenehan engaged in "explicit conversations concerning the abuse of children" with the officer. Lenehan sent the officer a of 'first generation' custom made images of children, including one of an eight-year-old girl holding a placard with the date and the defendant's Kik Messenger username.
The images were later traced to a man in Torquay who was arrested and convicted, the court heard. Officers also used Lenehan's internet provider address from Kik Messenger to trace him to an address on Devonshire Place in Preston. A mobile phone was seized containing 61 indecent images and videos of children, including one category A - the most serious - three category B and 57 category C. The victims were aged between five and 10 and one of the abuse videos lasted more than five minutes.
Attempts had also been made to delete the images on the phone which had been in the defendant's possession since Lenehan pleaded guilty to encouraging a man to take and send him indecent images of children, distributing indecent images and possessing indecent images. Lenehan, now of Gargrave Road, Skipton, was jailed for 31 months and ordered to the sex offenders register. William Smith secretly filmed women and children undressing in public changing rooms and sunbeds and using disabled toilets. He targeted dozens of victims at the Trafford Centre in Manchester, Darwen Leisure Centre, sunbed shops in Greater Manchester and other leisure centre wet rooms across Lancashire over a four-year period.
The year-old used a 'specially adapted' mobile phone covered in black tape to film women and children getting changed in ading cubicles. The pervert also 'manually removed' air vents at sunbed shops to create a 'hole' for his camera and in some cases 'inadvertently recorded his own face'. Smith's offending first came to light when he was caught filming a year-old girl in the 'swimming village' at Darwen Leisure Centre in May Smith, of Darwenwas jailed for two years in for separate voyeurism and indecent images offences and was a registered sex offender at the time of the latest offences.
He provided a false name to gain membership at Darwen Leisure Centre but 'did use his genuine address'. When Smith's home on Redearth Road was searched by police they recovered the mobile phone which contained 23 different recordings from Darwen Leisure Centre, including the year-old girl.
The recordings revealed that seven children, aged between six and 15, were also captured on six different clips using the changing cubicles. A forensic analysis of the mobile phone showed dozens of other incidents at the Trafford Centre and sunbed shops in Rawtenstall and Greater Manchester.
He placed the camera behind the toilet and then 'flushed and used the hand dryer to maintain the pretense that he used the facilities'.
